Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami, a senior member of the Assembly of Experts, explained the policy of Islamic Republic about supporting the current president and rulers of Syria. Accordingly, the main goal of Iranian government is saving “national interests”.

Seyyed Ahmad Khatami censured a group of Iranian politicians who usually criticize Islamic Republic for supporting Bashar al-Assad, the head of Syrian regime. “Our enemies are trying hard to dispatch their troops to Syria. They are going to do this in order to topple Islamic Resistance against Israel in Iran, Lebanon and Palestine. If the Western countries accomplish their goals in Syria, their next targets will be Iraq and Iran.”

“Enemies are nearing to Iran’s borders. Saving the national interests is the main intention of Islamic Republic from supporting the Syrian government. Religious beliefs are the next reasons for Iran’s Syria policy.” Ahmad Khatami, Tehran’s substitute Friday prayer leader, added.

Iran, China and Russia are the main supporters of Bashar al-Assad government. However numbers of Iranian politicians and opposition groups have expressed their protests against Islamic Republic over its Syrian policy.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader, has announced his support for the paramilitary groups fighting with Israeli government. Iran is the largest supporter of Hamas group and Qods division of IRGC instructs and trains the members of Hamas.
